Diamond Clarity: Looking Beyond the Letters

Just Brilliant's D color standard for lab grown diamonds describes color. Clarity is a separate quality, and its terminology deserves an equally precise reading.

Letters such as VS and VVS refer to the visibility of characteristics under the grading conditions used by the laboratory. They should not be treated as interchangeable expressions for brightness or overall perfection.

Understanding the clarity terms

VS means Very Slightly Included; VVS means Very, Very Slightly Included. The numbered subdivisions distinguish levels within those categories, with 1 above 2.

Clarity assessment considers characteristics such as their size, number, position, nature and visibility, typically at ten times magnification within the grading framework.

A higher clarity grade can be more difficult to distinguish visually without magnification. The practical appearance still depends on the individual stone, including where a characteristic is located and how the cutting style presents it.

A diamond seen at a natural distance

A report provides a controlled assessment. The wearer encounters the diamond through its actual size and setting.

A broad faceted emerald cut can present internal features differently from a round brilliant. A small accent stone also has a different visual role from a large solitary center.

Terms such as “eye clean” need context because they are not a universal laboratory grade. Viewing distance, lighting and the observer can affect that description.

The Just Brilliant perspective

The Maison's exclusive D color commitment does not imply that every lab grown diamond has the same clarity grade. The characteristics of the particular stone should remain clear in its description and available documentation.

The pursuit of perfection is a broader craftsmanship ambition: choosing suitable materials and bringing them into a resolved design.

Clarity knowledge supports that ambition by making the language exact. The grade describes one aspect of the diamond; the finished jewel brings the whole selection into view.
