Maiden Tower in İçərişəhər — Baku.
A three-stone engagement ring is one composition, not three isolated choices. For a selection in Baku, the side stones shape the passage from center to shoulders, adding breadth, contrast or a quieter transition around the principal diamond.
Begin with the center diamond’s actual dimensions and the wearer’s preferred visual balance. The side stones can frame the center, extend its geometry or introduce a contrasting outline.
Compare the relationship, not only the names
A tapered baguette is an elongated step-cut shape that narrows toward one end. A half-moon has a curved outer edge and a straighter inner edge. A trapezoid brings a four-sided, angled outline. Each can create a different transition from the center diamond toward the band.
Look at orientation as well as shape. A taper can lead the eye outward; a curved side stone can echo a softer center outline; an angled shape can extend a geometric one. These are design directions to compare in the actual arrangement.
Record both side stones' dimensions and the complete ring's width. Then consider spacing and setting angles on the hand. The shape name explains the component; its size and position explain the relationship.
Keep the center consistent
If the side stones are the main decision, compare arrangements around reasonably similar center dimensions where possible. Otherwise, a much larger center can change the composition before the side-stone difference is understood.
For a commission, establish which actual stones inform the design. A rendering around generic dimensions should not become an unexplained promise about the finished ring.
Request front and profile views with the agreed dimensions. They help keep the complete arrangement clear through approval.
Consider the side stones in profile
Ask how each side stone is set and where it sits relative to the center and band. A visually balanced front view may contain deliberately different angles or heights.
At a fitting, notice the full setting’s relationship to neighboring fingers. The center’s dimensions alone do not describe all contact points.
If a wedding band will be worn alongside the ring, include it in the comparison and ask a jeweler to assess any contact between settings.
Read the three-stone specification
Keep four entries: the center, each side stone and the complete ring. For the stones, record identity, origin, weight, dimensions and any supplied documentation. For the ring, record gold, size, full width and approved profile.
A report for the center may leave the side stones outside its scope. Have their description retained in the purchase record as well.
Identify whether the pair of side stones is visually matched or whether a contrast is deliberate. The final specification should explain the composition chosen, including any intentional difference in shape or appearance from the center.
