How Lab Grown Diamonds Are Made: From Growth to Jewelry

The lab grown diamond in a finished Just Brilliant jewel has passed through distinct stages. Crystal growth produces the material; cutting develops its faceted form; selection and setting bring it into the design.

The Maison's commitment is to D color exclusively for its lab grown diamonds. That standard concerns the selected stone, rather than the name of a growth method alone.

Two principal growth methods

High pressure high temperature, usually abbreviated HPHT, uses conditions of intense pressure and heat to grow diamond from a carbon source around a seed.

Chemical vapor deposition, or CVD, uses a carbon bearing gas in a controlled chamber. Carbon is deposited onto a diamond seed as the crystal grows.

These are different technological routes to diamond. Neither abbreviation, by itself, establishes the clarity, color or visual quality of every resulting stone. Some lab grown diamonds also undergo treatment after growth, which is a separate part of their history.

The work of cutting

A grown crystal is not yet the faceted stone seen in a ring. Planning and cutting determine how the available material is shaped into a particular outline and arrangement of facets.

The decisions influence visible dimensions, proportions and the pattern of reflections. A round brilliant and an emerald cut offer different visual possibilities even when both begin with lab grown diamond.

The Just Brilliant creation

Jewelry design begins another set of relationships. The selected diamond must be placed at an appropriate scale within the gold, and the setting must support the intended composition.

A solitaire gives the stone a concentrated role. A line of smaller diamonds depends on continuity between many settings.

For Just Brilliant, understanding growth adds clarity to the material story. The finished jewel is then defined through the specific choices that follow: the stone selected, the outline developed and the craftsmanship that gives it a place in the Maison's design language.
